Search Engine optimisation has been the centre goal of most organisation with regards to their websites. Regardless of whether you are the local areas gardening service or a multi national, the higher you are ranked on a search engine’s result page the better it is for your company.
It is essential for any web profit based company to dominate on all major search engines, this however is a continued, very intricate process. It is no longer, or has never been, as simple as outdoor advertising, where the one who pays the most gets the biggest and best placed billboard or prime time TV advert, and it is by no means a situation where once you are on top you will stay on top for an extended period.
Different Rules
The cyber world in this sense is a very different place, where businesses have to play by different rules. The fact of the matter is that successful SEO is less about how much money a company has, how big their marketing department or budget is and more about being thorough, knowing what is required and knowing the rules of the game. SEO is more about getting the basics right and continued tweaking while upholding one of the golden rules of SEO, which is that content is king.
Content is incredibly important to any website. It is obvious but still needs stating, that the content of a website has to be useful to the user, it has to be applicable to the site and the business attached to that site and it has to be updated on a regular basis with effectively placed, useful links.
This is a very hard line to walk, often website owners try to get the search engines to rank their site higher by flooding their content with keywords and 90% of the time this back fires. Content has to be for the user, while keeping the search engines interested. This involves using keywords in selected places, using the links carefully and effectively and not having a hundred pages of text with the words “Swiss cheese conglomerate” randomly dropped into the text every ten words or so.
What about the white space
It is somewhat ironic that it can also be the use of white space that can effect your rankings or the successfulness of your SEO project. Yes content is essential and yes if you don’t get that right you are dead in the water, but like it was mentioned earlier, getting the basics right is merely the first step to success.
You also have to focus and tweak the smaller things, and something as small as the use of white space can effect the ranking on your page as well as the conversion rate of users. SEO is not just about getting the internet users to your site, it is also about getting them back again and getting them to spread the word to other users about your site. Social networks are dominating the web and the search engines are starting to use their referrals as a essential part o their algorithms.
Everyone talks all day long about rankings; good rankings, the highest and the best. Rankings are like liquid mercury; one day up and the next day down. Yes, you do need good ranking as this is how you are brought to the attention of potential customers.
But unless you get viable traffic, those rankings are totally meaningless. What must be understood is that though ranking is important in upping your traffic, traffic per se does not rely on ranking. So what can you do to turn whatever ranking you hold into traffic that leads to conversions?
Keywords, titles and descriptions
Keywords determine two things; the potential amount of web traffic overall you will get as well as the specific kind of web traffic you will attract. What must be remembered is that the popularity of specific keywords will come and go according to trends. Thus you will have to change your keywords to stay up to date and adjust your search engine optimisation accordingly. Analysing the performance of your keywords is important to make adjustments in time. Some people will automatically click on the first link they see in the search results, but the majority does not.
They look for a link with the description that is nearest to what they are looking
for. This is where great titles and descriptions help hugely. So draw your traffic
with eye-
Check out the competition
Checking up what your competitors are up to is an excellent strategy. Analyse the keywords favoured by some websites that compete with your own business. You learn more about your competitors this way than just the number of results they show in the search page listing. You can determine how big a threat your competitors are to you by checking how must optimisation they put into specific keywords. You will get ideas of what keywords they may be neglecting and cash in on this with better ranking for yourself.
Search engines and branding
Search engines are not equal, that is fact. There are many out there that you have not even heard of. You do not have the time or effort to waste in optimising for obscure search engines. Focus on the big boys that everyone knows about. Sharply focus on building up your brand. Make sure you have your banding on each page of your website. This means in multiple searches your brand will come up time after time.
